Loaded Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. While oven is preheating, wash your sweet potatoes and dry them using a paper towel. Let them sit for about 10 minutes.
  3. Using a fork, pierce each sweet potato at least five times. Wrap each sweet potato in foil and place in oven. Bake for 45 min to 1 hour. Baking time will depend on the size of your potatoes. To check if they are done, squeeze one of the potatoes in an oven mitt protected hand and insert a sharp knife or fork into the center. The knife should glide easily through the potato.
  4. Remove sweet potatoes from oven and remove foil. Cut the sweet potatoes lengthwise and mash the flesh of the sweet potato with a fork to soften.
  5. Top with greek yogurt, honey, cinnamon, granola, pepitas and any other topping you or your guests fancy! Peanut butter, nuts or dried cranberries make wonderful toppings, too!
  6. Enjoy!

Raspberry Chia Jam Breakfast BarsRaspberry Chia Jam Breakfast BarsRaspberry Chia Jam Breakfast Bars

Ingredients:

Raspberry Chia Jam

Granola & Oat Bars

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Raspberry Chia Jam: In a medium pot, combine all the ingredients listed above, except for the vanilla extract, stirring until it’s combined. Bring the ingredients to a low boil. Once it reaches a low boil, reduce the heat to medium. Cover the pot and let the jam simmer for about 10 minutes. Continuously stir jam while it simmers until the raspberries melt and the contents start to thicken. Remove pot from stove and stir in the vanilla extract. Transfer the jam into a closed container and place in the freezer to cool.
  3. Granola & Oat Squares: Create your chia egg by combining the chia seeds and water in a small mug. Mix and set aside at room temperature for about 5 minutes or until it thickens.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, stir your melted coconut oil, maple syrup, honey, and vanilla. Add chia egg in once it’s ready.
  5. Create your rolled oat flour by grinding it in a food processor or high-speed blender on high until you reach a flour like consistency. It should happen fairly quickly.
  6. Add one ingredient at a time, stirring in first the rolled oats, almond flour, oat flour, baking soda, and salt until the mixture comes together. The mixture should be sticky.
  7. Take 2/3 of the oat mixture in to the baking pan. Use a piece of parchment paper to press the contents down and spread evenly across the pan. You may need to press the dough firmly against the pan with a spatula.
  8. Remove raspberry chia jam from the freezer and layer it evenly over the oat mixture.
  9. Use the remaining oat mixture to layer over the chia jam, crumbling it on top.
  10. Place the breakfast bars in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, uncovered. After the first 20 minutes, remove the bars and sprinkle Mamma Chia Vanilla Almond Chia Granola Clusters on top for an extra crunch. If the tops of the bars appear to have browned cover the pan in tinfoil for the remainder 5-10 minutes.
  11. Remove pan from oven and set aside to cool for 30 mins. Carefully slice the bars into squares and enjoy!

Marbled Blueberry Lavender Ice Cream

Sun “so hot it will melt your Popsicle”…or your ice cream in this case! Summer is officially a wrap after Labor Day weekend. Treat chia-self and your guests one last time during the holiday weekend with a creamy homemade treat! This marbled blueberry ice cream with hints of lavender and coconut goodness will have everyone melting over this delightful dessert. Take one scoop, two scoops, maybe even three! There’s plenty to go around for everyone to cool off with!

* This recipe requires an ice cream maker to create a creamy-like consistency.

Marbled Blueberry Lavender Ice Cream

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of full fat organic canned coconut milk or organic cream
  • 1/2 cup organic coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup organic blue agave
  • 1 tsp organic vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp dried organic culinary lavender
  • 1 1/2 cups organic blueberries
  • 2 Tbsp organic brown sugar
  • Optional: Wild Blueberry Chia Granola Clusters as a topping

Preparation:

  1. Add canned coconut, coconut milk, and agave to a medium saucepan. Heat the ingredients on low and slowly bring to a simmer being careful not to boil. Once ingredients start to simmer turn off stove and let it cool for a couple minutes.
  2. Transfer ingredients from the saucepan to a blender and add lavender and vanilla. Blend for a minute or until ingredients are combined.
  3. Place mixture in a covered container and stow away in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
  4. Blend or mash up your blueberries with a fork and transfer into a small pan with brown sugar over medium heat. Stir together the ingredients until it starts to thicken. After about 15 minutes or when it reaches a syrup like consistency remove from heat, transfer into a covered container and stow in the refrigerator with the ice cream base.
  5. Pour coconut base into your ice cream maker and churn according to manufacturer’s directions until it reaches a soft serve texture. Ours took about 15-20 minutes. Transfer ice cream into a freezer friendly container filling it only half way with the coconut base. Take out your blueberry sauce and layer it on top. Repeat this again first layering in the coconut and placing the blueberry layer on top. Once tray is filled swirl together the ingredients with a knife or a toothpick to create a marbled look in the ice cream. Once finished cover the ice cream and place into the freezer for 3-4 hours or until the ice cream is hard enough to enjoy!

We’re feeling hot, hot, hot this month as the summer days are coming to an end. Squeeze in some last minute rays and spice up your warm weather game with these DIY Summer Essentials. As pre and post sun necessities, this beach towel and aloe vera go hand-in-hand, especially when the majority of the day is spent outside basking in the sun.

DIY Beach Towel

DIY Summer Essentials

Let your creative soul shine through with this custom beach towel made with one common household item…bleach! Create witty summer sayings like “In need of Vitamin Sea”, “Salty but Sweet”, or “Seas the Day” on your favorite colored towel. You can also ditch the quote and create a bleach design like (splatters, polka dots, stripes, tie dye, etc.) instead! Your towel can be anything you want it to be. Get crafting and show off your towel at the beach or pool before your summer fun is over!

*We suggest adult supervision if working with children

DIY Summer Essentials

What You Need:

  • beach towel
  • 1/2 cup bleach
  • 1/2 water
  • rubber gloves
  • card board
  • spray bottle
  • thick paper, card stock, or stencils

DIY Summer Essentials

Instructions:

  1. Type out the quote you chose onto a document making sure letters are big enough so when you go to print there is only one letter per page. If you are using store bought stencils skip to Step 3.
  2. Cut down the letters into smaller rectangles so when you place them on the towel they are as close together as possible. Remove the inside lettering from the rectangle to create a stencil, but remember to keep inside pieces that have holes in the center i.e. (D, O, R).
  3. In a well ventilated area, set up your work surface by laying out a piece of cardboard to place the towel on. Set your stencils on the towel in the desired order. To avoid splattering outside of your stencils use extra pieces of cardboard to surround any open space that could be ruined if you want a more clean look to your towel. Also, tape any seams between each stencil to prevent bleeding in between letters (see in photo below). DIY Summer Essentials
  4. Mix 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup bleach into a squirt bottle. Put your rubber gloves on and begin to spray the letters evenly with the bleach mixture. BEFORE spraying make sure to twist the squirt bottle cap and test each spray until you reach a light mist. This is very important so you don’t over-saturate the towel with bleach causing your letters to bleed with one another. Stand 2-3 feet away as you spray to lightly cover the stencils. Spray no more than 15 times. From there use your judgement for how much more you should spray for your desired look. Depending on the towel some colors will change quickly, others like the one in the photo, will take a while to notice any change so be patient during this process. Once finished spraying, let the bleached towel sit for no more than 10 minutes.
  5. After 10 minutes and with rubber gloves on, remove towel from work surface and rinse out the towel in a sink or tub with cold water. Wring out the towel and toss it into a washer with laundry detergent. Transfer to a dryer after it’s finished. While towel is in the wash dispose of the cardboard and stencils with gloves on.DIY Summer Essentails
  6. Once towel is dried, take it for a trip to the beach or hit the pool and show off your summer creation!

DIY Aloe Vera Cooling Cubes

DIY Summer Essentials

After a day full of fun in the sun your skin may be a little irritated with you. We all know the common remedy to curing sun burnt skin is aloe vera. But, before you go out and buy the store bought option create your own 100% natural aloe vera cooling cubes at home. They will relieve your skin and have it thanking you and singing “aloe you vera much”, after this extra special treatment. Chill out! Not only will this organic remedy take some heat off, it will also cool your skin to the touch since this DIY remedy requires freezing to help soothe and return your skin to its happy state.

DIY Summer Essentials DIY Summer Essentials DIY Summer Essentials

What You Need:

  • dixie cups or ice cube tray
  • lavender essential oil
  • 2 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tbsp witch hazel extract
  • 1/4 cup aloe vera gel from Medical Aloe Plant

DIY Summer Essentials

Instructions:

  1. Melt your coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl for 10-15 seconds if solid. Remove from microwave, add 2 tablespoons of avocado oil, mix the two ingredients together and set aside.
  2. Remove a few stems from your aloe plant that will give you at least 1/4 cup of aloe gel. It is very important that you are using aloe from a Medical Aloe Plant as this is specifically used for topical usage. Skin the aloe gel from its outer shell until you have several clear gel strips. Dice the aloe and add to the bowl of coconut and avocado oil.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of witch hazel to the bowl and 8-10 drops of lavender essential oil.
  4. Whisk together all the ingredients until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Pour mixture into dixie cups and freeze overnight.
  6. Remove from freezer and rip around the edges of the dixie cup until aloe pop is exposed. Slowly move across sun burnt shoulders, arms, and legs to soothe your skin. Pop any remaining aloe back in the freezer for next time.

Chia Seeds for Energy

Power up and give your workout an added boost by consuming chia seeds for energy! A tablespoon of these nutritious seeds are the perfect ingredient to incorporate into pre-workout snacks like protein bites or chia pudding. Our Chia Energy Beverage is also a quick way to hydrate prior to an intense workout, plus you get the added kick of natural caffeine from guayusa.  Why does chia give you energy? Well, these tiny seeds are packed with protein, fiber, and omega-3s to provide a balanced ratio of nutrition!  Avoid spikes and drops in your blood sugar or insulin levels by consuming these powerful seeds to fuel your body, keeping it happy and satisfied throughout your entire work out.

Combine this pre-workout nutrition with a quick 5 minute ab routine and take your fitness regimen up a notch! Set time aside at the beginning or end of your workout and tighten your core with this speedy combo of exercises for tighter abs. This workout requires no extra equipment, so feel free to get your heart rate pumping wherever your day takes you!

First, warm up your body. Sit back into Child’s Pose to open your hips for a few breaths. Slowly rise to a tabletop position and flow through Cow and Cat Pose to warm up your back and begin to engage your core. Inhale as you drop your belly for Cow and exhale as you arch your back up to the sky, drawing your belly in for Cat. Move one breath to one movement until your body is ready for the core workout.

*Please listen to the wisdom of your body while attempting the following routine. Each movement will be performed non-stop for 1 minute without any pauses in between each exercise.

  1. Mountain Climbers

Chia Seeds for Energy

Return to a neutral tabletop position and extend one leg out straight behind you, one at a time, to set yourself up into a plank position. Shoulders will be stacked directly over wrists, belly button is drawn up and in towards your spine. Create a straight line with your body and tense your quads to fully engage your body.  Have a clock or stopwatch handy to keep track of when you need to switch to the next ab exercise. Start the clock and one knee at a time begin to pull them in towards your chest, alternating each leg for 1 minute. Remember to keep a flat spine throughout this movement and to work at your own pace!

  1. Superman Planks

Chia Seeds for Energy

In this round, you will alternate between lifting the opposite arm with the opposite leg at the same time, while in a plank position and keeping your core pulled in tight. Begin by lifting your left arm and right leg at the same time until arm is shoulder height and leg is hip height. Switch arms and legs, lifting your right arm and left leg this time. Alternate between each side for 1 minute.

  1. Side Plank Crunches

Chia Seeds for EnergyLay on your right side and drop down onto your elbow, being mindful that your shoulder is stacked directly over your elbow with your fingertips pointing in the same direction that you are facing. Spin to the outside of your right ankle and stack the left ankle on top, lifting your hips up to the sky while pressing down with your palm. Extend your left arm overhead and lift the left leg up to match. Crunch your left elbow in to meet your left knee and extend back straight. Repeat this movement for 30 seconds then switch sides. Remember to try to not take any breaks in between transitioning.

  1. V-Ups Crunch

Power Up with Chia Seeds

Take a seat and slowly lower down onto your back one vertebrae at a time. Legs are extended straight, arms are stretched overhead. For 1 minute you will crunch up, bringing your knees in toward your chest as you rise up onto your sitting bones. Lift your heart forward rather than hunching your shoulders, allowing you to use all of your core strength to sit up. Make sure you aren’t using the weight of your arms to hoist you up and keep shins parallel to the sky as you lift.

  1. Windshield Wipers

Power Up with Chia Seeds

Time to target your obliques! Return your back to the floor and extend your arms out to a “T” by your sides. Lift your legs back up if they aren’t already. Keeping your legs as straight as possible above your hips, alternate leaning your legs to the left and right. Remember to pause for a second in the middle before switching to the other side so you are in control and gentle on your lower back. Press into your palms to keep you grounded and stable.

After you’ve completed the ab workout flip over onto your belly and press yourself into Cobra pose to stretch your core and relieve it of the heat you created. Repeat this workout as much as you desire!

Happy Sweating!

Meditation for Beginners

Meditation for Beginners

Meditation is the practice of creating peace with oneself and occurs when the mind is calm and silent. This practice dates back to around 1500 B.C. There are a few different ways to approach meditation, but the most common form for beginners is through mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation is a simple way to ease into growing your practice and can help open up your mind to other styles of meditation later on. There are many physical and mental benefits that come from practicing meditation on a consistent basis.

Meditation can:

  • Help relieve stress
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve sleeping habits
  • Gain clarity and peace of mind
  • Increase energy levels

Before you begin any type of meditation you will need to find a quiet place away from any distractions. Make sure to put away and turn off any technology that may interrupt your practice. When choosing your meditation spot you should find a place where you can relax and one that you can visit on a consistent basis. The more frequently you meditate in a repeated location the more comfortable and at ease you will be to take your meditation to a deeper level. Feel free to use a cushion or blanket to sit on while you meditate or simply take a seat on the ground.

After you pick a location, take a seat with legs loosely crossed and sit upright. Palms rest facing down on the tops of your thighs and eyes will shut as you begin to concentrate on your breath moving in and out through your nose. Tuck your chin in a little to create added length to the back of your neck and relax your jaw.

Once settled, place one palm over your heart and one over your belly. Feel your heart beating into one palm as your belly fills and empties in the other. Keep your hands here and engage your pranayama, Sanskrit for breathing, to calm the mind and prepare it for meditation. The most common form of pranayama is 4-4-4-4 breathing. This means you will fill up your lungs as you count to 4, pause at the top for 4 seconds, exhale for 4, and hold at the bottom of your breath for 4 seconds. Keep breathing like this for 10 rounds.

Meditation For BeginnersRelease your hands back to your thighs, palms can face down again or palms can face up as you connect your index finger to your thumb creating your Jnana (juhnah-nuh) Mudra. This mudra will clear the mind and improve concentration. Find stillness in your thoughts, bringing awareness to your breath and its natural movement, rising and falling in your chest. Bring attention to your third eye, the spot between your eyebrows, as you silence your mind. This may be difficult to do at first, but remember it’s okay if thoughts come and go throughout your meditation. Allow yourself to gently acknowledge those thoughts and then release them, just like waves rolling in and out on a beach. Welcome any miscellaneous thoughts with a light heart and let them be taken back out to sea.

Meditation for Beginners
Let your body ground itself to the Earth below you as you continue to find stillness for 5 more minutes. It’s okay if your practice ends up short or past the remaining 5 minutes. Once you find yourself slowly starting to bring yourself back to the present, bring your hands to your heart’s center so that your palms face one another. Give yourself permission to slip away from what your day has in store and allow yourself to enjoy a brief moment of peace. Slowly blink your eyes awake as you complete your meditation. Note that this is your practice and there are no rights or wrongs. Your practice will continue to develop the more you meditate. Consistency is key to meditation rather than how long the duration of meditation lasts.

Recipes to Make Your 4th of July Sparkle

Fourth of July is right around the corner and we are leaping with joy for the festivities that are about to commence! There’s something about the good food, warm weather, and the magic of fireworks that makes our Souls sing! Looking back at childhood memories, we have to admit that food is half the fun! That said, we put together some healthy recipes that you can share with your loved ones on Independence Day that are not only delicious, but healthy too! Here are 3 fun and festive recipes to make your 4th of July sparkle!

Blissfully Patriotic Blueberry Pie [GLUTEN FREE]

This pie will take your 4th of July festivities to the next level! Sweet blueberries combine with our tasty Blackberry Bliss Chia Squeeze to make this a treat your guests will never forget (with half the guilt)!

Recipes to Make Your 4th of July Sparkle

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 2 ½ cups organic all-purpose gluten free flour
  • 2 Tbsp. organic sugar
  • 1 tsp. xanthan gum
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 12 Tbsp. organic cold butter or vegetable shortening
  • 2 organic eggs
  • 4 tsp. organic lemon juice or vinegar

For the filling:

  • 5 cups fresh organic blueberries
  • 1 Tbsp. freshly squeezed organic lemon juice
  • 1 Mamma Chia Organic Blackberry Bliss Chia Squeeze
  • 3 Tbsp. organic cornstarch
  • ½ cup organic coconut sugar + extra for sprinkling on top
  • ¼ tsp. organic cinnamon
  • 1 large organic egg, beaten with 1 Tbsp. water (for egg wash).
    • Vegan? Use organic coconut oil!

Preparation

If using store-bought dough (which is totally fine!) skip steps 1-7:

  1. Mix together flour, xanthan gum, salt and sugar.
  2. Cut the butter or shortening into small chunks and work them into the flour mixture until crumbly.
  3. Whisk the egg and lemon juice or vinegar together till very foamy. Mix into the flour/butter mixture until it all hold together, adding 1-3 additional tablespoons of cold water if necessary.
  4. Shape dough into a large ball and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour (up to overnight).
  5. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and allow to rest at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before rolling.
  6. Cut mixture in half and roll into 2 balls (one for each crust or topping).
  7. With floured hands, roll 1 of the dough balls and place onto a sheet of floured parchment or wax paper.
  8. Lightly grease your 9” pie pan and place the bottom dough layer into the pan. Cover crust with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
  9. Roll out the other ball (your top crust) into a circle approximately 1 inch larger in diameter than pie pan. Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. NOTE: If making a lattice crust, roll into 1/8 inch thick rectangle (approx. 11 x 14 inches). Cut into 10 separate strips (about ¾ inch wide). Cover strips in plastic wrap and chill for about 30 minutes.
  10. Place one oven rack on the bottom and one in the middle. Preheat your over to 400 degrees F.
  11. In a large bowl, whisk together lemon juice and Blackberry Bliss Chia Squeeze, gradually sprinkling in cornstarch, until smooth. Stir in coconut sugar and cinnamon. Fold in blueberries to coat. Let sit for about 5 minutes.
  12. Take crust out of refrigerator (if you haven’t done so already) and pour blueberry mixture into prepared bottom crust.
  13. Brush the rim of the crust with egg wash or coconut oil.
  14. Place top crust on and crimp together edges with fingertips to seal the bottom and top crusts. Be sure to cut some slits for ventilation. If using a cookie cutter to create a star vents, do so right before placing your crust on top of your pie. NOTE: If dough seems soft and warm, cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes.
  15. Brust crust with egg wash or coconut oil, sprinkle with coconut sugar and place pie on baking sheet on the bottom rack for 20 minutes.
  16. Reduce heat to 375 degrees F and transfer pie (while still on baking sheet) to center rack and continue baking for 30-40 minutes. If edges begin to brown, cover the edges with foil. If the entire top crust starts to brown too quickly, tent pie loosely with foil.
  17. Remove from oven and let cool to set and thicken. Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!

White Layer

Blue Layer

  1. Prepare each layer one at a time.
    1. Red Layer – Place raspberries, strawberries, dairy-free milk, and sweetener (optional) into a blender. Blend ingredients together until its smooth. Pour into a sealed container and add chia seeds. Stir the seeds with the liquid until completely mixed. Cover and place in refrigerator.
    2. White Layer – Mix dairy-free milk in a small bowl or container with chia seeds, agave, and vanilla extract. Cover and place in refrigerator.
    3. Blue Layer –In a blender combine dairy-free milk and blueberries, blending until smooth. Move liquid to a sealed container and add the remaining chia seeds to the mixture and stir. Cover and place in the refrigerator
  2. Let all 3 layers sit overnight allowing the chia seeds to fully expand and create a pudding-like consistency. NOTE: It often helps to mix the pudding again after the 1st hour being chilled.
  3. Take all 3 chia puddings out and begin to layer each color on top of one another one at a time in a clear glass or bowl.
  4. Feel free to garnish with extra berries leftover and enjoy!

Patriotic Pops (Makes 6 pops)

“Beet” the heat with these healthy pops that include our newest Chia Squeeze flavor, Cherry Beet, to add some tartness to everyone’s favorite frozen treat!

Recipes to Make Your 4th of July Sparkle

Ingredients

Red Layer

White Layer

  •  2 cups non-dairy yogurt (we used So-Delicious Vanilla flavored Coconut Milk yogurt)

Blue Layer

Extra supplies you’ll need:

  • 5 oz paper cups
  • Paper straws or wooden popsicle sticks

Preparation

  1. Red Layer – Blend one Cherry Beet Chia Squeeze with raspberries and strawberries until it reaches a purée consistency. Set aside 6 paper cups, these will be your Popsicle molds. Disperse the red layer equally into all 6 cups and immediately place in the freezer for 2 hours.
  2. White Layer – Once the red layer is frozen, remove molds from the freezer and add any non-dairy yogurt of your choice to the mold to create the middle white layer. When finished adding the second layer, gently add paper straws or Popsicle sticks.  If you decide to use paper straws, snip each straw in half so the stick won’t be too long when placed into the mold. Place pops back in to the freezer for 2 more hours.
  3. Blue Layer – Blend one Wild Raspberry Chia Squeeze and blueberries until ingredients are completely puréed. Remove pops one last time and add the final layer. Place pops back into the freezer and let it sit overnight.
  4. Remove pops when you’re ready to eat. Run the paper cups under warm running water, rotating the cup around for 30 seconds. Carefully twist and pull pop from mold and enjoy!

Benefits of Chia Seeds for Hair and Skin

Did you think you could only reap the benefits of chia seeds by incorporating them into your snacks and meals? Well, who knew you could actually use chia seeds to create your own DIY spa day! We’ve got a handful of tips about how consuming chia can help your hair, skin and body experience the beauty benefits both inside and out!

Benefits of Chia Seeds for Hair

Our hair, just like chia, is full of protein, which is necessary to keep it strong and thick. Chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse containing 20% more protein than soy beans, plus added Omega-3’s that are critical to help prevent hair loss.  Adding chia seeds, a complete protein, to your diet can help promote luscious locks.

DIY Chia Seed Hair Mask

Give your tresses an extra boost of pampering with this DIY hair mask. Chia seeds are the perfect ingredient to add to any hair mask treatment of your choice since they are able to swell up to 12x their normal size when placed in water. This allows the chia seeds to create a gel like consistency that will hydrate your hair. Get summer ready locks with this hair mask recipe. All that is required is 4 simple ingredients: apple cider vinegar for glossiness, coconut oil to condition, chia seeds for hydration, and honey to smooth.

Benefits of Chia Seeds for Hair and Skin

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl.
  2. Pop the bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds to melt the coconut oil so it can be mixed with all the other ingredients. Set aside to cool.
  3. Gently work a pinch of the hair mask through your ends after shampooing and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. Rinse and enjoy your silky soft hair.
  4. Store leftovers in small glass container and use whenever you please.

How to Use Chia Seeds

Have you been wondering how to use chia seeds? Well, the opportunities are endless so we’ve put together some easy and creative ideas!

Chia seeds have been revered by the Maya and Aztec for their amazing energy and healing powers. One tablespoon of chia seeds was considered capable of sustaining a warrior for up to 24 hours. Today, chia is the force behind long distance runners, professional athletes, celebrity chefs and more!

Neutral in flavor, chia seeds can be added to virtually any recipe for a nutritional boost! Just one tablespoon of chia provides 2430mg Omega-3s, as well as 16% of your daily recommended value of fiber, protein and more! In a gram for gram comparison, chia has…

  • 8x more Omega-3s than salmon
  • 25% more fiber than flaxseed
  • 2x more potassium than bananas
  • 6x more calcium than milk

According to Janie Hoffman’s The Chia Cookbook, “Chia has unique characteristics that make it a dream ingredient. Just a few tablespoons of the seeds have the potential to transform the texture, lower the calorie count, and enhance the visual appeal of a recipe. Cook with chia and you’ll not only get the benefits of this nutritional power-house, you’ll also delight in sumptuous, flavorful, satisfying foods.”

Here are some simple and delicious (and fun!) ways to use chia seeds below. Enjoy!

According to The Chia Cookbook, “Chia may look like the other seeds in your spice rack, but it’s best to think about this member of the mint family (its botanical name is Salvia Hispanica) as a food rather than a garnish or flavoring. In fact, chia is a whole food, and its qualities are distinctly different from anything else in your cupboard.” Unlike flaxseeds, chia does not need to be ground in order to benefit from the nutrients. However, keep in mind that both whole and ground chia are nutritiously the same.

Chia as a flour substitute

Milled chia is a great substitute for all-purpose flour in a variety of recipes. Use milled chia to thicken soups, mix it with bread crumbs to coat chicken or fish, or use it as a flour replacement in baking! You can even mill your own chia at home with a coffee grinder!

Chia as an egg substitute

Chia eggs” are probably one of the best ways to use chia in cooking or baking! When chia is hydrated to the right consistency, it forms a gel that’s as thick and smooth as an egg. This makes it a perfect egg replacement in baking, an excellent binder in recipes like meatballs, or an egg “extender” for frittatas and omelets. To replace one large egg, combine one tablespoon of chia seeds with three tablespoons of room-temperature water. Whisk together and let sit until it forms into a gel.

Tip: think beyond water! Using juice, broth, almond, coconut or dairy milk to hydrate the chia will add more flavor to whatever dish you’re creating. Always be sure to use room-temperature gels! Cold liquids can make the gelling process take longer.

More ways to use chia gel

For smoothies, cocktails, and soups, use a thin chia gel by whisking together 2 tablespoons of chia seeds with 1 cup of room-temperature water. More ideas for that are below!

For condiments, dips, salad dressings, sauces, and egg dishes, use a thick chia gel by whisking together 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of room-temperature purified water.

According to The Chia Cookbook, replace up to one-quarter of the flour called for in a recipe with milled chia. This will give your baked goods a healthy makeover, raising their fiber, protein and Omega-3s.

When using chia gel to replace an egg in baking, it will add water to your recipe, which can result in slightly moister baked goods. Try adding chia to your next loaf of banana bread! If you’re aiming for a drier texture, simply add a few minutes to the baking time to allow the excess liquid to evaporate.

Chia pudding might be one of the most traditional ways to use chia. It’s so easy to make, we can see why! A creamy chia pudding makes a wonderful breakfast that’s packed with Omega-3s and complete protein to keep you energized throughout the day. Similar to chia gel, combine 1/2 cup of chia seeds with 2 cups milk of choice. Add in your choice of sweetener, extracts or spices; whether it’s cinnamon, vanilla, honey, maple syrup, etc. the opportunities are endless! Whisk all ingredients together, let sit overnight in the refrigerator, and wake up to a beautiful breakfast the next day (makes 4 servings)! Top with fresh fruit or layer it with granola to make a beautiful parfait.

Chia is a delightful way to add a nutritional boost to your shakes, smoothies or cocktails! Tip: be careful not to add dry chia seeds to your drinks, as it may cause further thickening. When chia seeds are fully hydrated, they won’t cause further thickening to the beverage to which you add them. For best results, use chia gel in smoothies, shakes and cocktails.

Chia seeds are wonderful for garnishing any meal! Add a visually pleasing contrast by sprinkling chia seeds over curries and soups! Sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons on top of a salad to give it a nice crunch. Whisk chia into your yogurt or sprinkle it on your ice cream. Spread some on top of a bagel with cream cheese, or mix them into a stir-fry or pasta sauce. Mixing chia into condiments like ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, salsa, guacamole, relish and vinaigrettes will make them go farther, increase their nutrients, and cut their fat and calorie content! Plus, by adding volume to condiments and dressings, chia can also help you consume less sugar, a common ingredient in prepared foods. The opportunities are truly endless!

How to Use Chia Seeds for Your Work Out

As mentioned above, chia seeds are a wonderful source of complete protein. A complete protein (or whole protein) is a source of protein that contains an adequate proportion of all nine of the essential amino acids necessary for the dietary needs of humans. To make the most of your workout, aim to eat a chia protein shake within an hour after your workout. This can help reduce inflammation as well as build and repair muscle tissue.

Chia seeds are also an excellent way to stay hydrated! When chia seeds are placed in water, they can swell up to 12x their normal size.  This means that you’ll reap the benefits of that additional H2O when you eat them, thus helping you stay hydrated for a longer period of time.

Chia seeds are often used by runners to avoid leg cramping and reduce inflammation and joint pain!

A diet rich in healthy fatty foods can help you achieve beautiful hair, skin and nails. In addition to eating chia seeds for their Omega-3 benefits, you can place them directly onto your hair and skin for added benefits! Incorporate them into your next face mask, like this Chia Green Tea Face Mask for an ultra hydrating and energizing lift to your skin!

Memorial Day is almost here — can you believe it? As the unofficial kick-off of summer, we tend to overindulge on summery classics that aren’t the healthiest for us (hot dogs and ketchup anyone?). We wanted to share some of festive classics with a slightly healthier (and chiarrific!) twist, all while still staying true to the red, white and blue!

Cheesecake Filled Strawberries With Chia

Cheesecake Filled Strawberries With Chia

Ingredients:

  • 24 large, fresh organic strawberries
  • 1 (8oz) package organic cream cheese, room temperature or softened slightly
  • ½ cup organic powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp organic vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp finely grated lemon zest
  • 2 Tbsp organic white chia seeds
  • ½ cup fresh blueberries

Preparation:

  1. Wash your strawberries, then cut the stems from the strawberries, so the strawberries can sit cut-side down.
  2. On the opposite side of the strawberrry, cut an”X” from the tip down, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  3. Mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, lemon zest and lemon juice in a bowl until soft and fluffy.
  4. Gently open up each strawberry and pipe the filling inside using a pastry bag or plastic sandwich bag with a star piping tip.

Dressed Up Deviled Eggs With Chia

Ingredients:

  • 12 organic, cage free eggs
  • 1/3 cup organic Greek yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp organic mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp organic Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 Tbsp organic black chia seeds
  • 2 tsp organic vinegar
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 tsp natural, plant-based red food coloring of choice
  • 1 tsp natural, plant-based blue food coloring of choice

Preparation:

  1. Place eggs in a large saucepan. Cover them with cool water by 1 inch. Slowly bring water to a boil over medium heat; when the water has reached a boil, cover and remove from heat. Let sit 12 minutes.
  2. Drain eggs and place back in saucepan.  Make an ice bath and let sit for 15 minutes.  This will allow the eggs to easily peel.
  3. Peel and cut your hard boiled eggs (make sure they are cooled down), placing yoke in a bowl.
  4. For the red dye, combine 1 cup boiling water with 1 tsp. vinegar and 1 tsp. red dye in a medium bowl. For the blue dye, combine 1 cup boiling water with 1 tsp. vinegar and 1 tsp. blue dye in another medium bowl.
  5. Place 4 eggs in the red dye bowl, and another 4 eggs in the blue dye bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes, remove and then pat dry. We recommend repeating this step to ensure brightly colored, vibrant eggs.
  6. In a separate mixing bowl, mix together egg yolks, Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, and salt. Scoop into eggs, or pipe them using a pastry bag or zip-top bag with a piping tip
  7. Sprinkle with chia seeds and paprika (if desired). Enjoy!

Isn’t spring the best feeling? These Resource Girls are loving all of the sunshine, fresh air and patio nights with grilled food. Those cold months stuck around way too long if you ask us. With the newness that spring brings we want to embrace Mamma Chia’s motto of ‘Seed Your Soul’ this season and find a few new ways to include it into our home decor.

As Resource Girls, we believe that a positive word or phrase has the ability to turn your day around. We love embracing positive affirmations on our clothing or jewelry, and definitely won’t shy away from some inspirational quotes hanging on our walls at home. Little extra reminders like these help us remember to not take life too seriously and to live in the present.  If you’re of the same mindset as us or just needing a little extra positivity then we’ve got just the project for you!  We are firm believers that at home projects don’t need to be overly complicated or expensive.  Below are a few of the items you’ll need and we promise the rest is easy and will have your home feeling ready for warmer days in no time!

Chalk Paint DIY by The Resource Girls | Mamma Chia Blog
Items Needed ||

Wooden board or sign (if you want it to be magnetic, use one with a tin surface like the one pictured above!)
Black chalkboard marker or chalkboard paint with paint brush
Terra cotta pot
Acrylic paint with paint brush
Colorful chalk markers
Plant for your pot

Tutorial ||

  1. Ensure your surface is clean. Using your black chalkboard marker or chalkboard paint and paint brush, draw/paint over the entire area you want to create a chalkboard on. For the sign, we covered the entire front.  For the pot, we only drew a square and colored that in. Make it as big or small as you want!
  1. Allow the black chalkboard pen or paint to dry per instructions. Ours didn’t take too long and after one hour, we added another two layers  to ensure the black color was dark enough and no surface was showing through.
  1. While the second coat dries, use a gold permanent sharpie and color the edge of your board, or us any colored acrylic paint.  If you don’t have an edge that shows then you may skip this step.
  1. Now comes the fun part! Make it your own and write a fun saying or quote on your chalkboard surface using chalkboard markers. We love Mamma Chia’s ‘Seed Your Soul’ motto, but we say write what makes your soul happy. Using the chalkboard markers make a pattern or design on it to give it some flair. Mess up? No problem!  Chalkboard markers can easily be cleaned up on the chalkboard surface you created with a wet paper towel. Once you’ve wiped it off, pat the surface dry with a clean paper towel.  These chalkboard markers can be used on wood, paper or terra cotta pots. We’re sure there are many more fun ways to use them around your home, so get creative!

If this doesn’t get you ready for some spring cleaning and decorating we don’t know what will!  Add the sign to your desk at work for weekly reminders, or place your newly decorated pot on your back porch next to your patio chair to give you an extra ounce of sunshine while you relax and enjoy yourself. We’re sure this little bit of positivity, along with a friendly reminder to ‘Seed Your Soul’ will have you channeling positive vibes, ensuring that you will have your best spring yet!Chalk Paint DIY by The Resource Girls | Mamma Chia Blog

Benefits of Chia Seeds for Runners

On your mark, get set, GO! Lace up your running shoes, grab a Mamma Chia Beverage full of organic chia seeds and drink up before you head out the door to get your sweat on! Chia seeds for runners? You bet! These magical seeds will take you that extra mile – whether you’re training, in the middle of a race or just out for a jog.

Think consuming chia seeds before a run is just a fad?  Think again! Chia seeds actually date back to as early as 3,000 B.C. when they were essential for sustaining both the Aztec and Mayan warriors for up to 24 hours. However, it was the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s Copper Canyon who introduced chia seeds into their diet prior to long distance runs to power their stamina. These small, but mighty seeds are one of the most nutrient dense superfoods on the planet and are packed with Omega-3’s, complete protein, fiber, potassium and so much more! They have rapidly gained popularity in today’s diet and if we look to history, they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon!

Want to UP your running game? Here’s a list of reasons why we recommend chia seeds for runners!

1. Chia is Key to Hydration

The golden rule to running is to always stay hydrated and chia can help with this! Soak some seeds in water for 10-15 minutes and watch them swell up to 12x their normal size. When you drink a 10 oz. glass of water mixed with 1 tbsp. of chia seeds 30 minutes before your run, you’ll reap the benefits of that additional H2O, helping you stay hydrated longer and kicking your thirst to the curb.

2. Reduce Inflammation and Joint Pain

Putting lots of miles of strain on your lower limbs? The Omega-3 essential fatty acids found in chia seeds help to relieve stress off your joints during and after your runs.  Adding chia into your routine will not only make your angry joints happy, but speed up the recovery process your body needs to heal, as well.

3. Avoid Cramping

Nothing is worse than a calf cramp in the middle of a run. Ouch! Everyone knows the common remedy to muscle cramps is potassium (aka eat a banana), but why not try some chia instead. On a gram for gram basis, chia seeds actually have 2x more potassium than bananas!  Next time instead of reaching for our yellow fruit friend, choose some chia seeds that can also help regulate body fluid levels and retain electrolytes.

4. Run Longer

Sometimes we all want to go that extra mile, and now, maybe you can! To help you achieve this, these absorbent seeds can help slow the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar, making sure the carbs consumed prior to running can fuel the body for longer periods of time. Why stop at 3 miles when you can actually run 5?

5. Extra Boost of Energy

Chia seeds are already an amazing source of natural energy, but give your body more nourishment or an extra boost of energy to take your running to the next level! Drink a Mamma Chia Organic Chia Energy Beverage prior to a run to not only hydrate your body, but get an all-natural kick of caffeine sourced from the Amazonian tea leaf, Guayusa (gwhy-you-sa). This organic energy beverage will get you out the door within minutes and keep you focused until you reach the finish line. Another running favorite, Mamma Chia Organic Chia Squeeze pouches! These on-the-go snacks are so light and compact you can easily stash one in your pocket or water belt for a tasty pick-me-up in the middle of your run!

Whether you’re hitting the pavement for the first time or a seasoned marathoner, remember your body needs rest, water and plenty of nutrients for recovery. Introduce chia seeds into your running routine, or into your everyday diet, to feel the effects of this superfood. Consume them prior, during or after a run and you will notice the difference! Chia seeds for runners are truly beneficial for any level!

Happy running!

Stair Steppin' Workout by The Resource Girls

The days are finally getting longer, the sun is just a little bit warmer and the smell of new beginnings and a fresh start is in the air! This time of year has everyone feeling like they can conquer the world and their fitness routine, so there’s no time like the present to do just that. Time to get steppin’!

As certified Resource Girls, we never like anything that’s too complicated or expensive. We like our workouts to be quick and efficient so that we can move on with our day. This is how we came up with this short and sweet body weight workout that will leave you burning calories, sore the next day, and feeling like a true boss. The only thing you need is a set of stairs and your own two feet.

It may be a little corny, but we LOVE acronyms when it comes to workouts. You only need to remember one word, in this case STEP,  and this will jog your memory for the specific exercise associated with each letter. It’s simple, so there’s no excuse not to get it done!

S – Step

Find some steps somewhere in your area. Think you don’t have steps? We’re sure there is a local high school that has a stadium or bleachers. We promise you can find steps somewhere. Get creative!

Every two minutes, alternate between jogging up and down the stairs and walking briskly, skipping a step each time. It should look something like this:

0-2 minutes – Jog up/down the stairs

2-4 minutes – Walk up/down stairs skipping a step every time.

4-6 minutes – Jog up/down the stairs

6-8 minutes – Walk up/down stairs skipping a step every time.

Keep this up for a total of twenty minutes!

Stair Steppin' Workout by The Resource Girls

T – Tricep Dips

Sit on the bottom step, place hands just outside the width of your body while keeping shoulders down and away from ears. Bend at the elbow to lower your body in front of the step, don’t let your butt touch the ground then press up and extend arms until your arm is straight. Squeeze your triceps at the top of the movement.

To make this movement more advanced keep legs straight, to modify, bend legs as needed. Do 8 reps, rest then repeat.

Stair Steppin' Workout by The Resource Girls

E – Extensions

While sitting on a step and keeping arms at your sides, extend legs straight out in front of you then bring knees into chest and back out again. You should definitely feel this in your lower abs. For a more advanced version also extend arms straight out in front of you, this will force you to balance by tightening your core.

Stair Steppin' Workout by The Resource Girls

P – Push-Up (with incline)

It wouldn’t be a Resource Girls workout without a couple push-ups thrown in! Try to do at least thirty incline push-ups. Modify by going to your knees or try a couple on your toes then go to your knees. You’re stronger than you think you are!

Stair Steppin' Workout by The Resource Girls

S – Squat

Not just any squat though, split squat stance utilizing the stairs. (see picture) With your left side of your body parallel to the steps, place your left foot on the first step and keep your right foot on the ground as you squat. Your right foot should be slightly back from your left, right knee bent, right heel up and weight in toes. Now squat up and down making sure left knee stays above ankle.

Attempt twenty reps then turn around to work your right side! Whether you do more or less than twenty, do the same number on each side.

We hope that after this short workout, your worries are less, your smile just a little bigger, and your spirit feels free. Seed Your Soul by opening your heart to something new and STEP into all the new possibilities this day has to offer! We promise you won’t regret it.

What You Need:

  • 2-3 empty Mamma Chia beverage bottles
  • 1 can of sea glass spray paint
  • Newspaper
  • Olive oil cooking spray
  • Twine
  • Bouquet of flowers

Directions:

  1. Wash your Mamma Chia beverage bottles clean with soap and warm water.
  2. Peel off the beverage label. There will be a sticky residue left after removal. Don’t worry, there’s a few household solutions to get the residue off. We used canned olive oil spray, but here’s a link to alternative options: How to Get Sticky Residue Off Glass
  3. Make sure the bottles are completely dry and find a well ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Lay down newspaper to protect the surface you are working on. Following the instructions on the can of spray paint, and one at a time begin to spray the first coat of paint. Do keep in mind that the more layers you spray with this specific paint, the darker your bottle will be and the less it will look like sea glass. We played around with different layers on each bottle to create an ombré effect.
  4. Let the bottles dry for at least 30 minutes before wrapping the twine around the rim of the bottle. When you’re wrapping the twine around the neck of the bottle, you can secure the loose piece by tying the ends together.
  5. Trim your flowers to fit into the bottles and arrange them as desired!

Measure 1/3 – 1/2 cup pure-castile liquid soap for a large load + 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar to the rinse cycle. Use half the amount for high efficiency (HE) washers. Mopping

Measure 1/2 cup pure-castile liquid soap with 3 gallons of hot water.

Windows

Measure 1 Tbsp. pure-castile liquid soap with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray down your windows and wipe with a cloth soaked in half water half vinegar mixture.

Toilet

Predilute pure-castile liquid soap 1:4 with water in a squirt bottle and add 25 drops of pure tea tree oil. Turn off the water on the side of the toilet and then flush to drain the water out of your toilet. Spray down the inside of the toilet bowl with the spray bottle contents and let sit for 10 minutes. Sprinkle baking soda on toilet cleaning brush and scrub toilet thoroughly. Turn the water on to fill the bowl with water, then flush.

    • How seed-sational! Almonds are not considered a nut but are actually a part of the seed family; technically making them relatives to chia seeds.
  • Peanuts
    • 1 acre if peanuts can make 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches. That’s nutty!
    • Did you know that peanuts are actually a legume? They’re related to beans and lentils making them another great source of plant-based protein.
  • Peanut Butter
    • Pile on that peanut butter! With just 2 tbsp. you’ll consume 8 tasty grams of protein.
    • Did someone say peanut butter chia time? About 90% of American households enjoy peanut butter, which pairs deliciously with homemade chia jam!
    • Hey there peanut butter lover! Did you know Californain’s consume the most peanut butter over other states!
  • Quinoa
    • Quinoa has 4x more iron than brown rice and 2x more dietary fiber than white rice.
    • Get chi-atta here! Quinoa is not actually a grain. It’s a seed related to beets and spinach.
  • Sorghum (Sawr-guh m)
    • Hosting a movie night? Kick back and pop some sorghum. It’s similar to regular popcorn, but smaller in size.
    • Sorghum? It’s a gluten-free grain that is a popular ingredient in many snack foods.
    • While 49% of sorghum worldwide is consumed, the remaining 51% has other uses like fuel, industry, and livestock feed.
  • Organic Agave
    • Move over honey! Agave is vegan-friendly & a great substitute in baking recipes.
    • Agave is a low glycemic plant meaning that the carbohydrates won’t cause an unhealthy spike in blood sugar. You’ll also avoid the “sugar rush” side effects caused by other sweeteners.
    • Aztecs not only used agave for nourishment, but also incorporated it in ancient healing remedies.
  • Chia Seeds
    • In Aztec days, this “superfood” was so super that it was often used as currency.
    • Stay hydrated and fueled. Chia seeds can absorb more than 12 times their weight in water, making them popular for endurance activities.
  • Sea Salt
    • Larger crystals and a saltier taste help you reduce your sodium intake.
    • Essential for maintaining a balance of electrolytes in your body, sea salt contains approximately 80 elements and minerals.
    • Pure sea salt retains all the essential elements from the sea including magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, and iodine.

Sometimes the kitchen can be the hardest area in our home to decorate. Maybe it’s because it tends to be the room that seems the most daunting, or depending on where you live, it can be the room with the least amount of space. If you’re in need of a little inspiration and want to spice up your kitchen decor, then we’ve got the perfect DIY for you below.  The best part? It’s both decorative and functional and that’s a win-win in our book! We were inspired to create a mini kitchen pantry shelf after reading one of our favorite cook books. We wanted something that served a purpose, but was cute to look at, too!

We took this old shelf and gave it a fresh coat of paint, then used this antiquing glaze to give it a vintage, distressed look.

Next we took a bunch of old jars, which included our empty Mamma Chia beverage bottles, to store some of our dry pantry goods. It’s important to use jars that are different heights and widths to provide dimension. What’s a kitchen without fresh flowers? We also used one of our empty bottles to serve as a vase in order to add something fresh and cheery. We love the eclectic, yet not cluttered, look of this shelf.  The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to these glass bottles.  We’ve also used them for storing our homemade salad dressing! Follow the simple tutorial below to recycle your old Mamma Chia beverage bottles into kitchen pantry containers!

For the finishing touch we added in these free kitchen printables. Simply go to the website and print off any of these designs and put in a frame.

Get creative! Cut the chalkboard tape into different shapes. Use different colored chalk or chalkboard markers. Find sayings that inspire you! This is what we love about DIY – you can make it your own!Mamma Chia Bottles as Kitchen Decor by The Resource Girls

Materials ||

  • Empty Mamma Chia beverage bottles
  • Goo Gone or any kind of adhesive remover
  • Chalk or chalkboard markers
  • Scotch chalkboard tape
  • Scissors

Tutorial ||

  1. Wash empty bottles with soap and water or run through dishwasher. Use an adhesive remover like Goo Gone to remove labels from bottles, then re-wash with warm soap and water to make sure all the glue is off the bottles.
  2. Decide what you want to put in your bottles then make labels.
  3. To make labels we used Scotch Chalkboard Tape. We found the chalkboard markers at Target or you could use actual chalk. The tape easily peels off so if you wanted to change what you put in the bottles it’s no problem.
  4. Simply cut tape to desired size and label each bottle according to what you put in it or write a fun inspirational saying. We definitely recommend cutting the tape first then writing on it.
  5. Don’t delay; fill with any pantry dry good – coffee, popcorn kernels, rice, beans, nuts, oats, the possibilities are endless!

My journey to “Eating Clean” started over a decade ago when I was suffering from a dozen health issues and doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. After being on a cocktail of drugs and losing hope, I have learned how to heal my body from numerous illnesses including Lyme disease to Hypothyroidism and C.Diff colitis. I started my website, TheHealthyApple.com to help anyone suffering from everyday minor symptoms such as a headache and bloating to chronic illness and autoimmune disease. I soon realized I wasn’t the only person suffering and there were others out there who needed healthy recipes that didn’t taste like cardboard! I learned how to get my body working FOR me- not against me. Instead of treating symptoms, I learned how to find the underlying imbalances in my body that were making me feel sick.

My hope is that my new book, Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body, helps change lives and gives you hope that you can get to the root cause of any symptom by eating and living a clean lifestyle, which means removing chemicals in our food and our environment on a daily basis so we are lowering our body burden. Something I learned for myself, that doctors didn’t tell me (and I’ve been to over 500 doctors) was that nothing changed until I started to clean up my food and my environment (personal care products, cleaning products and beauty products) because our skin is our biggest organ! I never realized how important it is to look not just at what we are putting in our bodies but also what we are putting on our bodies, as well. I also realized that I had to put my health in my own hands and be my own doctor to navigate through the world from illness to wellness and vitality!

In my new cookbook, Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body, I talk about how to start cleaning up your food and your life from chemicals and toxins that are in our everyday lifestyles from our food to our cleaning products. Detox is not what you think. In this book I outline what you need to do to detox your body on a daily basis and how to eat clean to support your overall health. I want to show you that eating clean feels amazing- not because you should, but because once you see life this way, you’ll never go back. There’s not a processed cupcake I’d eat to give up for how incredible I feel and if more people realized what an important role they play in their own health, they could change the quality of their life forever.

This cookbook is filled with over 200 plant-based recipes that are free of gluten, dairy, soy, refined sugar, eggs, white flours, peanuts and other inflammatory ingredients. No xanthan gum, no binders, no fake ingredients- all pure, whole anti-inflammatory foods such as chia seeds, walnuts, ground flaxseeds and more. Here’s a fun recipe from my cookbook that can be served as a quick and easy breakfast that can be made the night before (for busy weekday mornings) or served for a lazy Sunday morning brunch. Enjoy! Xo

For a grain-free breakfast packed with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and protein, you can’t beat chia. This makes an easy, no-cook breakfast for a weekday morning.

Top 5 Favorite Greens to Eat

1. Broccoli

Skip the fruits with this green veggie that’s ready to fill your belly up. One cup of fresh broccoli is equivalent to an orange, giving you your full daily serving of vitamin C! Broccoli, just like chia seeds, are high in fiber and it just so happens our new Chia & Greens beverages contain the two! So grab a bottle, drink up and get a double whammy of both nutrient packed foods!

2. Kale

Kale Yeah! This power green is great source of alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, which is essential for brain health. Did you know most of the kale in the U.S is grown in California? No wonder we’re nicknamed Kale-ifornia!

Throw together a quick kale salad to keep you sustained throughout the day. Kale and Honeycrisp Apple Salad: 2 handfuls of Kale, half of a honeycrisp apple diced, 1 tbsp dried cranberries, 1 tbsp feta cheese, 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds, add any dressing of your choice.

3. Cucumber

Be “cool as a cucumber” with this refreshing snack. This veggie may not be considered a power green, but its special powers have us wanting more, which is why this veggie is on our top 5 list. Don’t drink enough water during the day?  Crunch on some cucumber slices to hydrate your soul since they’re made up of 95% water, keeping you full and kicking any hunger cravings to the curb!

Kick back and relax with this light and easy salad from The Fresh Find! Tomato, Cucumber, and Mint Salad: 2 medium cucumbers, 3 roma tomatoes, 1/2 small onion, 1/2 medium avocado, 1 handful of mint, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp red wine vinegar.

4. Spinach

With Kale taking the current spotlight in the “power green” category, nutrient-rich spinach is often left in the dark. This leafy green is exceptionally beneficial for our vegan and vegetarian friends, as it is high in niacin, zinc, protein, fiber, vitamins C, A, E and K, thiamine, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and copper. Wow! This soft and flavorful green is a wonderful addition to any smoothie, juice, or salad!

Sauté a handful of spinach in a pan with a small drizzle of olive oil, and you’ve got a nutritious and delicious side dish. Add 1 Tbsp. of chia seeds for even more added nutrients!

5. Swiss Chard

It’s evident how nutritious this plant is by its bright-colored stalks and dark green leaves! The high fiber content in this plant (4g in 1 cup of cooked chard) is perfect for aiding digestion, as well as regulating blood sugar levels and improving overall colon health.

Incorporate swiss chard into your next smoothie with this simple and tasty recipe! Swiss Chard and Mango Smoothie: blend 1 cup of swiss chard with 1 cup frozen mango, ½ cup water, ½ cup ice, 1 lime wedge, and fresh squeezed juice of ½ an orange. Enjoy!

A beautiful beverage deserves a beautiful coaster! We’ve seen these beautiful, all natural coasters flying off the shelves at home decor stores. With a set ranging anywhere from $50-$150 in store, we figured it would be a delight to find an affordable way to makes these beautiful creations at home (at a fraction of the price)!

What You’ll Need:

  1. Geode/Agate slices. We found ours here! You can also find a beautiful selection on Amazon. Be sure to order slices that are at least 3.5″ in diameter.
  2. Small paintbrush
  3. Gold or Silver Liquid Leafing
  4. Rubber Feet (optional)

DIY Geode Coasters | Mamma Chia Blog

Directions:

Step 1: Apply the self-adhesive rubber feet on one side of each geode slice. If you are not using rubber feet, feel free to skip to step 2! Press and hold each rubber foot for 10-30 seconds to ensure it has fully adhered to the geode. Place a minimum of 4 to ensure equal stability. If your geode is a little more oblong in shape, you may need to add several more to avoid tilting of any kind when your beverage is resting on top.

DIY Geode Coasters | Mamma Chia Blog

Step 2: Lay out some newspaper or paper towels on your work area. Shake your gold/silver liquid leafing very well. Dip your paintbrush into the leafing and begin to paint the sides of geode. Tip: you might want to do this in a well ventilated area, as the fumes of the liquid leaf can be a bit overpowering!

DIY Geode Coasters | Mamma Chia Blog

Step 3: Once you have completed painting the sides of the geodes, gently place them on your newspaper or paper towel surface to dry. It should dry fairly fast!

Step 4: Enjoy your beautiful creation, or give to friends as gifts!

5 Heart-Opening Yoga Poses

5 Heart-Opening Yoga Poses

We naturally shield ourselves from previous experiences in our life by closing our hearts off in order to protect ourselves. It’s important that we encourage ourselves to reopen our hearts again so we are able to flourish and grow, surrendering to the present and allowing more room for joy to enter back in. These five heart-opening yoga poses will challenge you physically and mentally to help build a grounded foundation for a more open heart.

*Please listen to the wisdom of your body while practicing these poses. Also, please warm up properly before attempting these poses with a SUN A sequence.

Bhujangasana: Cobra Pose

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Lay flat on your belly with toes tucked under. Zip up your legs, squeezing them together, hands by your ribs. Inhale and begin to push the Earth away as you peel your chest from the ground, keeping a micro bend in your elbows, pressing into the tops of your feet and making sure to keep your gaze at the top of your mat. Exhale as you slowly lower back down to the floor, resting your forehead on your mat. Flow through this a couple times. This is your Baby Cobra variation as you continue to warm up your spine. On your final inhale rise all the way up, extending your arms as straight as you can, pulling your shoulders back. You can hold at the top of this pose for a few breaths before releasing back down as you exhale.

Anuvittasana: Standing Backbend

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Start standing at the top of your mat with feet hip distance apart. Inhale, your arms up above your head. Exhale, cactus your arms creating a 90° bend at your elbows, pinching your shoulder blades back and drawing them down your spine. Push your hips forward as you begin to lean back, and go as deep into this bend that your body allows. Hold here for a couple rounds of breath.

  • For a deeper variation interlace your fingers above your head with the exception of your index and thumb, creating a steeple mudra. Extend your arms straight above your head and begin to lean back.

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

On your next inhale slowly rise back up to standing and exhaling to a forward fold, releasing your lower back.

Ustrasana: Camel Pose

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Begin by kneeling on the floor with knees hip distance apart, pressing your weight into your shins and tops of your feet. Square your hips, with arms down at your sides. Inhale your hands to the small of your back, fingers pointing down. Exhale slowly start to recline back puffing up your chest and keeping thighs perpendicular to the floor. This might be enough for some, but if you feel comfortable you can slowly extend one hand down at a time to your heels. Keep your neck neutral or relax it by dropping it back, being mindful to not tense the back of your neck. Hold this pose for a few rounds of breath and when you’re ready to exit inhale your hands back up to your lower back, pushing your hips forward as you start to rise up, leading with your heart and allowing your head to lift last. Exhale into child’s pose.

Matsyasana: Fish Pose

Processed with VSCOcam with m3 preset

Lie on your back, knees bent, feet on the floor. Inhale lift your pelvis and slide your hands beneath your bottom with palms facing down. Exhale lower your pelvis back down on top of your hands, squeezing your forearms and elbows to your side. Inhale grounding down into your forearms and elbows puffing up your chest and lifting your head up from the floor creating an arch in your lower back. (If your back is flexible enough the crown of your head should be able to rest on the floor. If your head is resting on the floor be mindful of not crunching your neck and allowing little weight pressing between your head and the ground). You can keep your knees bent or exhale, straightening out the legs, activating your thighs by pushing weight through your heels. Take a few inhales and exhales here. On your final exhale slowly lower your back down to the ground, drawing your knees to your chest, wrapping your arms around to give yourself a big squeeze, releasing your spine.

Urdhva Dhanurasana: Wheel Pose (Variation)

Lie on your back, knees bent, heels hip distance apart, and fingertips at your side. Inhale, placing your hands by your head. Exhale, pushing your hips up to the sky for wheel pose keeping knees pointed forward and legs parallel to each other.

Take another inhale in wheel pose and as you exhale begin to bend into your elbows as you lower your head to the floor gently, bringing your forearms down to the mat one at a time to frame your head, interlacing your fingers. Inhale expanding your chest. Exhale to soften. Inhale squeeze your shoulder blades together, drawing them down your back. Take a couple breaths in and out here. This variation will help guide you to eventually reach Two- Legged Inverted Stagg Pose.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we often lose focus of what’s most important in our lives – ourselves! This weekend, we encourage you to find the time to say, “I love ME!” with some indulgent self-love. Here’s 5 simple ways to create some well-deserved me time.

1. Make Your Own Bath Bomb and Use It

What better way to sit back and relax than from the comfort of your own bathtub?  Buy yourself some flowers, submerge, and soak in this bath bomb. DIY inspiration from A Pumpkin & A Princess.

2. Get a Mani/Pedi

Grab a friend and get out of the house or bring the nail party to your place! Either way, this simple nail design trick from The Beauty Department will be sure to keep those hands and feet in the festive spirit.

3. Take a Yoga Class

Clear your mind, ground yourself in the moment and, most importantly, sweat it out! Try a new yoga studio around your area or explore a new pose you’ve always been wanting to try. Your body will thank you for re-centering it back to balance.

4. Snuggle Up and Read a Book

Curl up in your favorite spot in the house, make a cup of tea, and light a candle. Be a bookworm for a day, giving yourself an hour or even an entire evening to invest yourself in the moment, without any distractions.

5. Go For a Walk

Get outside for a breath of fresh air! Explore a new hiking trail or take your furry friend to the park. Spend time doing what feels good for you physically and mentally by checking back in with yourself while exploring what the beautiful outdoors has to offer.

Ingredients:

  • 6 Tbsp Mamma Chia organic chia seeds
  • 2 cups organic non-dairy milk
  • 6 large squares organic dark chocolate (at least 60% cacao)
  • ½ cup fresh organic raspberries + 6 to decorate

Directions:

  1. Place raspberries and 1 cup of non-dairy milk in blender and puree until smooth. Pour the mixture into a glass jar and add 3 Tbsp. of Mamma Chia organic chia seeds. Stir well with a spoon, or if your jar has a lid, shake well until all of the seeds are evenly covered  in the raspberry liquid. Cover with a tight lid and and place in the refrigerator.
  2. Place 4 chocolate squares into a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until chocolate is fully melted. If a microwave isn’t available, melt the chocolate over low heat on the stove. Be sure to place chocolate in a heatproof bowl that fits snugly over a pot of barely simmering water (or put the bowl directly in a wide, shallow skillet of barely simmering water). Stir occasionally until the chocolate is melted and smooth; remove it from the heat. Add 1 cup of non-dairy milk and whisk until combined.
  3. Once the chocolate mixture is cool, pour it into a glass jar and add 3 Tbsp. of chia seeds. Stir well with a spoon, or if your jar has a lid, shake well until all of the seeds are evenly covered in the chocolate liquid.
  4. Keep the raspberry and chocolate chia seed mixtures in the fridge overnight for at least 4 hours.
  5. Layer the chocolate and raspberry chia pudding into 2 small dessert glasses.
  6. Chop the remaining 2 squares of dark chocolate and use to decorate the chia pudding. Top with 2-3 fresh raspberries and enjoy!

Organic is Non-GMO field

We love our Mamma Chia community and enjoy the authentic connections and personal interactions we share. One of the questions we often get is whether Mamma Chia products are Non-GMO. Being Non-GMO is part of the USDA Certification process, so as all Mamma Chia products are USDA Organic, they are naturally Non-GMO too!

What does it mean to be Organic?

USDA Certified Organic products are produced without the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers, antibiotics, synthetic hormones, genetic engineering, sewage sludge (yes! that’s a conventional farming input), or irradiation. Yay! Who wants that?!

And, in order for Organic farms and processors to get certified they:

  • Do not use genetically modified ingredients
  • Preserve natural resources and biodiversity
  • Support animal health and welfare
  • Provide access to the outdoors so that animals can exercise their natural behaviors
  • Only use approved materials
  • Receive annual onsite inspections
  • Separate organic food from non-organic food

(Source: usda.gov)

What does it mean to be Non-GMO (Non-Genetically Modified)?

Foods that are Non-GMO are free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and are not created in a laboratory using genetic engineering techniques.

Is Non-GMO always Organic?

No, it’s not! Non-GMO is one of the many benefits you get when you buy organic, but just because a product is Non-GMO, does not mean it is also organic.

Mamma Chia is a passionate supporter of the labeling of genetically modified foods and believe everyone should have the opportunity to make informed choices about what goes into their bodies – because we love Mamma Earth and her people!
