Two stands in particular caught my attention: One was Mamma Chia, a new fruity drink that I’ve been seeing in all my local grocery stores. By Ray Latif – No longer just for dog-shaped window plants, chia is now a rising star in the world of “superfoods” — and a fast-emerging ingredient to watch in the beverage industry.
For a long time chia seeds were only stocked at health food markets, touted as a “superfood” with numerous health benefits. The seeds could be used in many different ways, easily blended into baked goods, and toasted and incorporated into salads. But now chia seeds have gone mainstream with texturally memorable Mamma Chia drinks.
Only eight months after its initial launch, Mamma Chia yesterday announced an agreement with United Natural Foods (UNFI) to distribute its organic chia seed beverage nationwide.
Mamma Chia offers a wide variety of organic chia seed beverage. The company donates 1 percent of its gross sales to support healthy, local food systems.
